Pittsburgh News & Activities

There are 34 members of the Order living in the Pittsburgh Region, including West Virginia and 1 in Ohio. There are four candidates in formation for the class of 2011 and 1 candidate will be invested in 2010.

In 2006-2008 the SMOM Association’s Grants Committee made grants to Pittsburgh-area ministries. The Knights and Dames in the region contributed approximately $50,000 toward these matching grants to purchase the two vans. This enabled the Little Sisters to buy a new Refrigerated Begging Van and new Twelve Seat Handicap Bus with Lift for 2008. Each of these vehicles travels the streets of Pittsburgh bearing the insignia of the Order of Malta Federal Association.

Volunteer Projects

  • Little Sisters of the Poor Home – A nursing home and health clinic for the poor. Federal Association members, their families and the Auxiliary have hosted holiday parties and provide money and supplies. Contact: Concetta Silvaggio, DM.

  • Little Sisters of the Poor founded by Jeanne Jugan – Mass-Reception for The Little Sisters of Pittsburgh after their St. Jeanne Jugan Mass, 22 November 2009. His Excellency David Zubik officiating. Helen Hanna Casey DM Chaired the Reception for The Little Sisters of the Poor- after the “Jeanne Jugan Mass, celebrating her – Canonization in Rome. Members of the Order in Pittsburgh and Friends of the Order made it possible for land and air travel for several of The Little Sisters and member residents to represent Pittsburgh in Rome. The representatives attended the Canonization of their Foundress, St. Jeanne Jugan. There they joined with representatives of the international chapters of Little Sisters of the Poor.

  • Rebuilding Together – Each year members of the Order volunteer in April with students from Oakland Catholic High School. Contact: Katherine Freyvogel, DM President of Oakland Catholic or Dan McGrogan, KM.

  • The Pittsburgh Oratory – Members of the Order assist with the Oratory’s outreach to the poor and homeless in Pittsburgh. Contact: Dan McGrogan, KM

  • AuxiliaryContact Dan McGrogan- all welcome to join auxiliary for hands-on projects high school to age 35. Volunteers of all ages welcome to help.
  • Malta Mercy - Eucharistic Ministry – Each Saturday members of the Order work with the Chaplain of Mercy Hospital Pittsburgh and Bishop Zubik’s mission to “Keep Catholic” in Mercy Hospital by acting as Eucharistic Ministers on a day when other volunteers and religious cannot serve the patients. 12 members of the Order participate regularly and several outside volunteers have joined us recently. As this 2 year old program grows more and more members will continue to become involved. – Contact: Alan Veeck, KM or Cindy Busch DM
  • Federal Association Board of Directors – Thomas Freyvogel KM is serving second term in DC. For Information regarding The SMOM Annual Pilgrimage to Lourdes Contact Lourdes Team Leader Thomas Freyvogel. For first hand accounts of Pittsburgh Region members’ Lourdes experience contact the following pilgrims: Joy Conti DM, Dan McGrogan KM, Mariah McGrogan Aux., and Thomas Freyvogel KM, Jim Haberman KM, and Thomas Celli. All will share The Lourdes Times. Sign up sheets from DC Headquarters are still available for Lourdes. Pittsburgh Region Lourdes Pilgrimage took our first Malade and companions from Pittsburgh Region to Lourdes 2009 as proposed by Joy Conti DM who accompanied the family.

Monthly Mass

Pittsburgh Allegheny County- Mass is held at Saint Mary’s Church (St. Mary’s of the Point) on Stanwix Street Downtown Pittsburgh at 12:00 noon

Greensburg Westmoreland County - Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral at 8:00 a.m.

NOTE: confirm monthly Pittsburgh mass location - church does rotate First Fridays to Epiphany Church also located downtown Pittsburgh

Spiritual Activities & Events

All members of the Order, candidates (and their families) are most cordially invited to participate in these spiritual activities.

  • First Friday Mass - Pittsburgh – Mass is held at St. Paul Cathedral at 12:00 noon; Gather for lunch with the Order.Contact - Alan Veeck, Director of Communications.
  • Western Pennsylvania Retreat Robes Requested – St. Vincent Archabbey – first full weekend in November: i.e. November 5-7, 2010. This retreat has been for several years the largest and most intriguing of the retreats because of the charism of our Benedictine hosts and retreat masters and the setting within the largest operating monastery in the world. Praying morning and evening with the monks, visiting the Lourdes Grotto and other activities have made this retreat special. The professed knights make their 8 day retreat coincidental with a 5 day retreat fot Class II and a 3 day retreat for Class III. Members from the Hungarian Association, the Rome Association and others, have attended from far away.– see St. Vincent College’s homepage for road directions to Archabbey.- By Air- Pittsburgh International Airport.

  • The Memorial Mass for the Deceased of the Order Robes requested is celebrated at St. Vincent’s Archabbey during SMOM Retreat in November. Contact: Dan McGrogan.

  • Observance of the Feast of St. John the Baptist Mass is celebrated by His Excellency David Zubik at the Oratroy in Pittsburgh; followed by Annual St. John’s SMOM Dinner at PAA Club. Contact: Dan McGrogan.

  • Spiritual Formation Committee Federal Association DC Concetta Silvaggio serves with committee in DC and in the Pittsburgh Region- is spiritual contact for SMOM candidates in formation.

  • Annual Day of The Sick Mass The members of the Order were present for the Mass held at Mercy Hospital Chapel for residents in observation of the Day of the Sick. The mass was celebrated by His Excellency David Zubik.

  • His Excellency David Zubik 2009 October Investiture Mass: invested as a chaplain Ad Honorum, of the Order. Adinner in DC was held in his honor and attended by Pittsburgh Region Members and spouses.

  • Class of 2009 Cookie Miller KM , ( W. McCook Miller) Helen Hanna Casey DM were Invested as a Knight and a Dame of the Order –Investiture Mass held at St Matthews Cathedral NW DC- October 2009.
  • The Year Book is available from SMOM Headquarters in DC- This reference book is an invaluable tool. The content is available online SMOM Federal Association site; however, the easiest access to review rules or locate data quickly is to use the hard copy of the SMOM Year Book.
