Hospitaller Region - Charlotte
The Federal Association began to take form in Charlotte in 1995. Today there are over 40 Knights and Dames in the western part of North Carolina. Membership is growing in Greensboro. The founding Hospitaller was Harry Grim followed by Dr. Don Joyce who was followed by Jerry Schmitt in January 2010.
Federal Association Chaplains in the Charlotte region are the Most Reverend William G. Curlin (Bishop of Charlotte – emeritus), Abbot Placid Solari (Belmont Abbey) and Monsignor Anthony Marcaccio.
Members of the Order (and their families) who are interested in participating in one of these activities should contact the Regional Hospitaller.
- Room in the Inn - Annually, more than fifty churches in Charlotte open their facilities to house and feed the overflow from the homeless centers during the winter months. The Charlotte Malta group staffs a shelter one night monthly during December, January, February, and March at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. The members provide supper and conversation. In the morning, the guests are provided with breakfast and a bag lunch before being returned to the local shelter. Contact Harry Grim.
- MedAssist of Mecklenburg County – A free medical clinic supported by the Association’s Clinic Program.
- Order of Malta New Orleans Home Rebuilding Program – Each year for the last 4 years the Charlotte region has had a contingent of Knights, Dames and volunteers spend 4 days working in New Orleans rebuilding homes.
- Lourdes Pilgrimage – Each year a significant number of Knights, Dames and volunteers make the annual Order of Malta Pilgrimage to Lourdes.
Bishop Curlin celebrates Mass on the first Friday of the month at 7:45 a.m. at Saint Gabriel’s Parish Daily Mass Chapel, followed by doughnuts and coffee.
All members of the Order (and their families) are most cordially invited to participate in these spiritual activities.
